Before and after shot of curly hair shoulder length to waist length

How to Grow Long Curly Hair (3 Simple Things That I Did to Get Tailbone Length Curls!

I used to have this ridiculous curly hair goal…

I wanted my curls to grow past my chest and covering my body like a mermaid. And honestly? I really didn’t think I’d actually get there.

But now… my curly hair is tailbone length!

So in this post, I’m sharing the 3 things that actually helped me grow my curly hair, especially if your hair feels stuck and just isn’t retaining length.

Before Anything: The Mindset Shift You NEED

Before we even get into the tips — I have to say this:

Hair growth is a long game.

When I decided I wanted waist-length hair, I already knew:

  • It was going to take time
  • I’d need patience
  • I might have to let go of certain styles

And that’s exactly what I did.

I stopped chasing trends, and I focused on what actually worked for my hair.

👉 If something is making your hair feel softer, healthier, or even grow a little… keep doing that. Don’t switch it up every week.

1. I Stopped Over-Shampooing My Hair

At one point, I got caught up in the trend of washing my hair with shampoo all the time.

And honestly? It ruined my hair.

My curls became:

  • Dry
  • Brittle
  • Prone to breakage

So I went back to what worked for me:

  • Weekly co-washing
  • Using herbal ‘shampoos’
  • Shampoo only when needed

Why this works:

Your scalp produces sebum (natural oil) — and that oil is like liquid GOLD for curly hair.

Because of the twists and coils, it takes longer for that oil to travel down your strands. If you're constantly shampooing, you're washing it away before it has a chance to nourish your hair strands.

And nothing you buy will fully replace what your scalp naturally produces.

👉 Important:
Not shampooing doesn’t mean not washing. I still cleanse my hair — I just do it more gently (co-washes, herbs, etc.).

2. I Left My Hair Alone (Seriously)

This one takes a little self-discipline…

But if you’re constantly restyling your hair, you’re probably causing breakage without realising it.

We all love to switch up our style — I get it. But your hair?

It just wants:

  • Time
  • Space
  • Moisture

Think of your hair like a plant 🌱
If you keep digging it up… it’s not going to grow.

What I focused on instead:

  • Low manipulation styles
  • Not restyling every few days
  • Only styling when necessary

And most importantly…

👉 Leaving it alone does NOT mean neglecting it

I still:

  • Added water regularly
  • Sealed in moisture
  • Kept my hair nourished

Quick tip:

The best moisture combo is:
Water + a sealant (like a butter, oil or cream)

3. I Started Making My Own Haircare Using Herbs

This is the step that took my hair from waist-length to tailbone length.

I started incorporating herbs into my routine — through my own formulations, and sometimes just using them simply.

If you’re new to herbs, keep it simple:

You can literally:

  1. Boil herbs in water
  2. Strain it
  3. Use it on your hair

That’s it.

Why herbs made such a difference for me:

I chose herbs that:

  • Support scalp health
  • Strengthen hair strands
  • Promote thickness

And I truly believe this is why my hair stayed:

  • Strong
  • Dense
  • Healthy

Even after:

  • Postpartum shedding
  • Periods of neglect (the newborn phase is no joke 😅)

I know not everyone wants to spend hours in the kitchen making their own haircare — and that’s completely fine.

That’s actually one of the reasons I started creating my own herbal hair products, like my Herbal Hair Butter and Hair Growth Oil.

These are the exact same products I used to grow tailbone length curls and are infused with herbs that support your hair in the same way they supported mine. They already do the work for you, nourishing, strengthening, and promoting growth without you having to DIY everything.

Real Talk: My Hair Wasn’t Always “Perfect”

During my journey, I had two babies (2022 and 2025), and I experienced a lot of shedding.
There were times my hair was:

  • Neglected
  • Matted
  • The last thing on my priority list

If you’ve ever had a newborn, you’ll understand.

At one point, I even questioned whether I wanted my hair this long anymore.
But because I had built a routine focused on strength and nourishment (especially with herbs), my hair stayed dense, strong, and was able to recover.

💭 Final Thoughts

If your hair feels stuck at the same length, it’s not that it can’t grow.
It’s usually:

  • Too much manipulation
  • Too much stripping (over-shampooing)
  • Not enough nourishment

Start simple:

  • Be patient
  • Keep your curls moisturised
  • Do what works for your unique hair

And your hair will follow.
