How to Keep Moisture in Curly Hair All Week (Based on Your Porosity Type)
Share
If you’ve ever struggled to keep your curls moisturized—even for a single day—you’re not alone. Curly hair naturally dries out faster than straight or wavy hair, no matter your porosity. That’s just the way our beautiful curls are built! But don’t worry—lasting moisture isn’t impossible. The key is knowing your porosity and using the right techniques to lock in hydration.
Porosity can sound confusing, but it’s really just about how your curls let water in and how quickly they let it out. Think of it like a sponge: some sponges absorb water slowly but hold it for a long time; others soak up water fast but dry out quickly.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Low porosity: Hair is tight and resistant. Water sits on top rather than soaking in. Products can build up if not applied carefully.
- Medium porosity: Hair allows moisture in and retains it well—your “happy medium.”
- High porosity: Hair absorbs water quickly but loses it just as fast. Often feels dry and frizzy if not sealed.
- Combination porosity: Like me! Some areas of your hair behave differently, so you need a tailored approach.
Quick porosity test:
- Take a strand of clean, dry hair.
- Drop it into a cup of water.
- Floats = low porosity
- Sinks slowly = medium
- Sinks quickly = high
Knowing your porosity helps you choose the right products and methods to keep moisture locked in.
If you have high or combination porosity, your hair will likely lose moisture fast unless it’s sealed in properly. Here’s the routine I use (and swear by) to keep my curls hydrated all week:
- Water first: Start with freshly washed hair and mist it lightly with water. Hydration is step one!
- Leave-in conditioner: Adds extra moisture and prepares your curls for sealing.
- Heavy sealant: I use my own homemade hair butter, which locks in hydration and keeps curls soft and defined.
Layering in this exact order—water → leave-in → hair butter—has made a huge difference in my curl retention. No dryness by midweek, even on days I don’t wash.
Moisture Methods for Medium and Low Porosity Hair
Even if your hair isn’t high porosity, understanding your type can help retain hydration longer.
Medium porosity hair:
- Absorbs moisture well but still benefits from sealing.
- Routine: Water → leave-in → lighter cream or butter (medium-weight works best).
- Tip: Try a using a hair butter first for maximum moisture. If this feels to heavy then use a lighter cream and play around with using different amount to find the right balance for you curls.
Low porosity hair:
- Resistant to absorbing moisture, so products can sit on top.
- Routine: Use warm water or steam to help open cuticles → lightweight leave-in → tiny amount of hair butter or a light weight cream.
- Tip: Always apply heavier products to freshly washed hair to avoid buildup and maximise absorption. Use a light leave in or water mist during the week to top up moisture.
No matter your porosity, the right layering and sealing method makes all the difference.
Extra Tips for Moisture That Lasts
- Shampooing: Low porosity benefits from regular gentle clarifying shampoo whilst medium to high porosity curls will thrive from regular co-washing and moisturising shampoos.
- Use gentle products: Sulfate-free and nourishing products help curls stay moisturized. I particularly opt for herbal infused products to deeply nourish my curls.
- Protect at night: Satin pillowcases or hair wraps reduce moisture loss while sleeping.
- Refresh midweek: A quick spritz of water + a tiny bit of hair butter or leave in conditioner can revive curls.
- Water = Hydration: Remember the key to moisture is sealing in the hydration, so if your curls feel dry always add water before applying any products to seal the moisture in.
